Overturn remains on course to tackle Simonsig in Arkle Chase

Although he wasn’t spectacular in maintaining his unbeaten record over fences with a bloodless success over three rivals in a Doncaster novice chase on January 9, the Donald McCain-trained Overturn did little wrong as he builds up to a crack at the hot favourite Simonsig in the eagerly anticipated Grade 1 Racing Post Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival on March 12.

Sent off a red-hot 2/5 favourite in the Paddy Power horse racing odds for the Novices Chase, the high quality dual-purpose performer confirmed the impression made when making a winning fencing bow at Sandown in November by making all the running in thetwo-mile-three furlong Town Moor contest, warming to his task as the race progressed and putting in some spectacular leaps under regular pilot Jason Maguire in the second half of the contest, drawing well clear of the 142-rated Conquistador to eventually stroll home by a facile 25 lengths.

A delighted McCain greeted his victor back in the winners’ enclosure and suggested that the gelded son of Barathea would improve considerably for the outing and would most likely have one more run – probably back at Doncaster in February – before heading to the Cheltenham Festival to attempt to lower the colours of the tremendously exciting Simonsig, currently the even money ante-post favourite for the two-mile novice chasing championship contest.

Following his second win from as many outings over fences Overturn remains a top-priced 7/1 second favourite for the Cheltenham race, returning to the track where he ran such a fantastic race in the 2012 Stan James Champion Hurdle when finding only Rock On Ruby too good for him and having the great Hurricane Fly behind him in third.

The nine-year-oldis one of the toughest and most consistent horses in training having landed the valuable 2010 Northumberland Plate and the even more lucrative Galway Hurdle in a fabulously successful summer campaign. He went on to win the 2011 Chester Cup before switching codes again to win last season’s Grade 2 Coral Hurdle at Ascot before defeating former champion hurdler Binocular in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle.

After finishing second in the Champion Hurdle last March, Overturn ran another tremendous race when finding only Ile De Re too good for him as he finished second in his defence of the Chester Cup Handicap off an official Flat mark of a whopping 106. At his current odds he looks cracking each-way value for the Arkle Chase given his sound jumping and excellent record at Cheltenham.
